We tend to forget how important shipping Groups are in wordwide trade exchanges. While products and expertise may be enough to create demand around the world, a quality transport solution is necessary to make these needs and reality.
Bringing the world together
Indeed, with 470 vessels and 170 shipping lines around the world, CMA CGM is on all continents in more than 160 countries.
Such a network helps bringing countries together and allows any person to enjoy a product from a distant country anywhere in the world.
To take France as an example, CMA CGM vessels (like the CMA CGM Bougainville) are carrying out of France 6,000,000 tons of merchandise each year.
So when you’re travelling around the world, if you notice a typically French product (or any other country-related product), there’s a good chance that it sailed on a CMA CGM vessel.
Which brings the question: which French products are transported on container ships?
All types of products…
A huge diversity of products are shipped from France, and as you might expect: food products are the most requested goods by consumers around the world. CMA CGM is a French company after all!
By carrying local products, CMA CGM helps local industries all around the world.
So, taking again the example of French export, where are these products heading?
…to all the corners of the world.
Meat: With a population of 1.3 billion, Chinese are big French meat consumers: beef, pork, etc. Distribution is ensured through the ports of Shanghai, Tianjin and Yantian.
China always held an important place for CMA CGM. More than just a business partner, China was a big part of CMA CGM’s history when Jacques Saadé, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the CMA CGM Group decided to extend the Group shipping lines towards Asia in 1986, and then opened the first local office in Shanghai in 1992.
23 years later, the relationship between CMA CGM and China is stronger thane ver. On July 1st 2015, the Chinese Prime Minister LI Keqiang came personally to meet Jacques Saadé at the CMA CGM Tower to sign two major economic agreements.
Fruit and vegetables : Thanks to its refrigerated containers called « Reefer », created for the transport of products under controlled temperature, CMA CGM carries apples, potatoes, and Kiwis from France towards Malta, Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali, Damman, and Longoni.
Reefers are containers with high technologies specifically made for transporting any product that needs a controlled atmosphere. This helps preserving the quality of the product. We will learn more about this fascinating technology in a future article.
Dairy products: French Powdered milk, reknowned for its quality, is extremely prised in China and EAU. This food product is transported in regular “Dry” containers while Reefers ensure butter and cheese transport.
In 2014, CMA CGM launched a unique wine transport operation in reefer containers. Proof of the constant search for innovation among CMA CGM, this project aimed at proving that maritime transport preserves the wine’s aromas and flavours.
