On July the 4th, the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, a 365 meters long vessel, will be transformed into a work of Art by world-renowned artist, JR.
Transforming a ship into a work of art
Since monday, JR’s team are working on the collage of 151 containers. These will be used as pixels, and once loaded on the CMA CGM MAGELLAN, will become an amazing work of art.
With this initiative, JR wanted to conclude his project « Women are Heroes » initiated in 2008, when he photographed the eyes of extraordinary women all around the world
For this project, the picture that will be assembled on the CMA CGM MAGELLAN will the eyes of Elizabeth, a Kenyan woman living in the Kibera slums, in Nairobi. She is one of the key person of her community
On July the 4th, the pasting of the 151 containers will be done. In a mechanical ballet, Elizabeth’s eyes will appear as the gantry cranes will load them on the container-ship.
The ship then will sail and take Elizabeth’s eyes on the Mediterranean sea, then pass the Suez Canal and take the direction of Asia.
