Mariia: My name is Mariia, I’m Ukrainian and I live in Kiev. I’m currently working for CMA CGM as a Third Officer.
On which ship do you currently work? (What is its route?)
Mariia: I’m on holidays at the moment but the last ship I was sailing on was the CMA CGM TARPON. In September I’ll board the CMA CGM NORMA. These vessels operate on the MEX line (Mediterranean Club Express), which links Asia to the Mediterranean Sea through the Arabic Peninsula.
How long have you been working for CMA CGM?
Mariia: The first time I went onboard a CMA CGM vessel was in 2014, so it was two and a half years ago!
What is your background (studies, previous positions)?
Mariia: Before joining CMA CGM, I was working as a cadet on bulk carriers.
Why did you choose this career?
Mariia: Actually, this profession came spontaneously in my life. I don’t have any family members or friends who are seafarers.
What do you like most about your job?
Mariia: It’s really hard to describe. My everyday working life is a great adventure, even if the job is not always easy. On each vessel, I have the chance to meet new crew, new people coming from different countries. It is such a great occasion to better know their culture. You always need to adapt to work as a team. My work also gives me the opportunity to travel easily and to enjoy long holidays when I’m not onboard a vessel.
What is your most memorable moment onboard?
Mariia: I have a lot of funny and memorable memories! One of the best was the little ceremony the Captain of the CMA CGM WHITE SHARK organized for the new cadets. It was like a christening ceremony: they organized a wonderful day for cadets, full of fun and laughs!
What is a typical day for you?
Mariia: My typical days onboard and at home are completely different. Onboard, each crew member has a personal schedule to respect. At home, I’m much more spontaneous. At the moment, I’m on holidays: yesterday, I flew back to Kiev from Iceland (such a great trip by the way!). This morning, I woke up with this idea to visit Prague: so I just bought a ticket and can now fly there immediately!
What is your next destination?
Mariia: I’ll board the CMA CGM NORMA pretty soon.
If you had any pieces of advice to give to someone who would like to follow your path, what would it be?
Mariia: If you choose this path, you’ll love it! Be humble in every situation onboard and do your job meticulously. Do not hesitate to ask for help from people who are more experienced than you are: sharing knowledge and experiences is one of the greatest things when you work as part of a team.
