Chief Officer Cristinel NASTRUT shares his professional experience on board the CMA CGM THAMES with us.
Please introduce yourself
My name is Cristinel NASTRUT, I am Romanian and I work as a Chief Officer at CMA CGM.
On which ship do you currently work?
Currently, I am working on board the CMA CGM THAMES, serving the EPIC1 shipping line.
For how long have you been working for CMA CGM?
I have been working for the CMA CGM Group since 2007. I have been part of the French Fleet from 2007 to 2011. It’s been nearly 6 years now that I’ve been working within the International Fleet at CMA CGM.
What is your background?
I graduated from “Mircea cel Batran” Naval Academy, in Constanta, Romania. Before becoming a Chief Officer, I worked as a Third Officer, then as a Second Officer. It is considered a usual path for Deck Officers.
Why did you chose this career?
My favorite answer to this question would be: “To see the world and new places”.
What do you like most about your job?
What I appreciate the most is the two worlds this job offers me to live in: on board, you never get bored working, it is a very demanding professional activity; once at home, you have a large period of time to spend with your family.
What is your most memorable moment onboard?
The moment I remember the most on board is the christening of a new vessel I had the chance to witness.
What is a typical day for you?
A typical day on board begins with a coffee time in the morning. It is a very important moment as it is the time when a large part of the crew can gather and discuss. The rest of the day is spent making sure that everything goes as planned.
What is your next destination?
Our next destination is the port of Ningbo, in China.
Any pieces of advice to give to someone who would like to follow your path?
If I had any piece of advice to give to anyone who wishes to work as a Chief Officer, I would recommend the he/she makes his/her decision after having carefully analysed his/her mental strength. If this person is tough enough, then just go ahead, this career is made for her!
If it were to start again, I would follow the same path and make no changes.
