A lofty 147m high, Marseille’s new lighthouse anchored between port and city, a link between sea and land, the CMA CGM Tower symbolises the Group as a dynamic force in the shipping world. Its purpose? To bring together 2,400 employees who until now had been split across seven sites in Marseille, and make this unique space the decision-making-beating-heart of the Group. Whether it’s the safety of our seafarers, customer service, or support provided to employees, everything now goes through the Tower, where 55 nationalities work side by side.
Ensuring the safety of seagoing personnel
CMA CGM’s first priority is to ensure that on every vessel, crew and cargo are transported in the best possible conditions regards safety and security on every trip. Piracy acts, inclement weather and the organisation of calls, all are brought to the attention of the CMA CGM teams and its Fleet Center. This in effect is the Group’s ‘shipping traffic’ control tower which assures this mission and supervises the Group’s vessels across the world.
Giving customers a premium service
Headquarters for the Executive Management, shipping lines and business units, the Tower is also the base for employees responsible for loading and discharging container ships, managing terminals in which the Group has a share, and controlling the reefer container fleet.
All these operations have the same purpose: to facilitate calls, meet deadlines, and manage organisational changes as they happen. The Group’s added value, instilled in and driving every member of staff, lies in its ability to satisfy customers by ensuring their goods arrive within the agreed deadline and in optimal conditions.
Support functions at the service of 18,000 employees
CMA CGM is headquartered in Marseille, from where 650 agencies worldwide and personnel aboard more than 400 vessels, servicing 170 shipping lines, are managed. This is where corporate teams in the support functions put their expertise to supporting the Group’s employees, wherever they are in the world, on whatever continent or ocean. They include communications, human resources, legal, marketing, internal audit, administration, IT and finance.
Strategic functions, such as chartering of vessels and bunkering (the department in charge of ships’ fuel supplies), are also managed from the Tower.
A Tower anchored in Marseille with The World at its door
To remain as close as possible to projects and the needs of its customers and respond to an ever-changing world, CMA CGM has set up branches covering strategic regions, in Hong Kong, Miami, São Paulo, Santiago in Chile, Durban and Dubai. These regional offices represent the interests of the Group’s lines and assure day-to-day contact and proximity with customers, while also keeping a close eye on market developments.
So the Tower is the Group’s lighthouse; a lighthouse which reaches out across all seas and oceans; a lighthouse at the service of its employees and customers – wherever they are in the world.
