Greenmodal Transport, the CMA CGM inland solution
With intermodal transport booming, CMA CGM has bought all of its intermodal subsidiaries together under one name: Greenmodal Transport. A simpler, more sustainable solution.
Trains, barges and trucks are critical components of the logistics chain, both upstream and downstream of ocean shipping. What is more—given the importance of international trade and rising environmental awareness—barges and trains are becoming the preferred solution for most inland shipping.
But setting up a logistics chain that is both reliable and eco-friendly is a major challenge for many businesses, and that’s why CMA CGM has grouped all five of its intermodal subsidiaries under one entity: Greenmodal Transport. The new organization simplifies life for customers and make combined transport accessible to every player in the market—froom shippers to forwarders to maritime operators.
CMA CGM subsidiaries Rail Link Europe, River Shuttle Containers, Land Transport International, Progeco, and TCX, with a combined total of 530 employees, joined Greenmodal Transport. Thanks to the expertise of these five entities—each a specialist in its own domain—the new organization has become the only operator in France to offer the option of combining road, rail and river transport.
Because its five component companies are complementary, Greenmodal Transport can offer shipping services that are neutral, efficient, and above all simplified. With Greenmodal Transport, organizing and managing the logistics chain is simple: customers have a single point of contact who can meet their expectations, not only for shipping, but also for container storage and repair. In addition to being simpler, the offer is highly reliable, because Greenmodal Transport controls its own shipping resources—an essential advantage in overcoming logistics problems. It makes the process more flexible. CMA CGM can shift from one mode to another if the customer’s needs require it, or if one mode has become saturated.
In addition to simplicity and reliability, Greenmodal Transport offers a low carbon footprint—a decisive factor for CMA CGM Group, which has long been actively committed to responsible, sustainable development for everyone. While combined transport is efficient and economical, it is above all a safe, eco-friendly shipping option, because it limits CO2 emissions. More simply, modal transfers are a way of adapting our shipping method to the distance we need to cover.
That limits costs, but even more importantly, it reduces carbon footprint. Thus, ocean freight is the most efficient, profitable and eco-friendly choice over long distances, while a train or barge will be better for shorter distances. Of course it’s impossible to avoid trucks, but with modal transfers they represent only a minimal part of the whole package. In addition, Greenmodal Transport is committed to offering strategic shipping solutions that comply with France’s Grenelle environmental guidelines and the EU’s Climate and Energy Packagef.
With EU member countries accounting for more than 60% of Europe’s trade, and eco-friendly transport becoming an economic necessity, Greenmodal Transport’s turnkey solutions give customers a competitive edge. Thanks to a reduced carbon footprint, a simplified offer, and reliable, flexible shipping solutions, the future looks bright for intermodal transport—and for Greenmodal.
