The world’s third largest container shipping company, CMA CGM and all its subsidiaries operate their businesses in a responsible, transparent and ethical way in accordance with clearly stated values. The Group also has in place a rigorous policy regarding safety, security and defense of the environment which is governed by international and national regulations. Last time, we discovered Social Responsibility and the rewards CMA CGM obtained regarding this domain. Today, we will focus on social actions and achievements for the environment.
Actions for the environment
Regards the Environment, the Group set itself extremely ambitious targets for CO2 emission per container per km reductions (-50% by 2015). In 2013, the CMA CGM Group already managed to improve its CO2 performance (CO2 emissions per container per km) by 40%.
These excellent results are partly due to the fact that the Group operates one of the youngest and most modern fleets, equipped with the latest ‘green’ technologies, and has achieved the international ISO 14001 standard.
CMA CGM also improved its services and customer solutions, with the implementation of the new carbon display feature on the Group Ecommerce platform (automatic and intermodal), as well as CO2 custom reporting services.
We should also mention the investments in eco-friendly containers (bamboo flooring, light steel, low energy-use reefers); the intermodal network promoting high volume transport by barge or block trains; and customized services helping customers to calculate the carbon footprint of a shipment door-to-door.
Also, the CMA CGM is working on new solutions based on the new regulations on the electric current connection to the dock in California, with 6 boats to be equipped in 2014, the Grenelle law made mandatory for customers to notify their carbon footprint, or the now mandatory energy efficiency plans on all vessels.
The Group is an active participant in numerous programs and working groups including the Clean Cargo Group, the Carbon Disclosure Project, the Clean Shipping Index and the Environmental Index.
Regarding the social aspect, the Group’s Human Resources policies have also been in the spotlight, particularly Health and Safety at Work, the reduction in number of accidents and its prevention policy, as well as the Investor in People program where CMA CGM UK achieved the highest level, the ‘Investors in People Gold Standard’.
