Alexis is a CMA CGM Regional Product Manager based in Durban, South Africa and has been training for long distance triathlon for over a year now.
What is your discipline?
Alexis: Long distance triathlon: open water swimming + cycling + running
How long have you been practicing it?
Alexis: I joined the triathlon community just over a year ago; I immediately fell in love with the sport.
What are the big events you’ve participated in? What are you currently training for?
Alexis: I participated in the Ironman 70.3 in Durban in June 2016. It’s a semi-distance of a full Ironman and equal to 1,9km swim + 90km cycling + 21km running. My next objective is to complete a Full Ironman; either in South Africa or back in France.
How often do you train?
Alexis: Triathlon requires a lot of training; alternating between all the disciplines coupled with core training at the gym. I enrolled in a team of triathletes which helped to motivate me to wake up a 4:15am every day of the week for 50 km of cycling or a 15km run before work. Nutrition is very important during training to keep a high level of energy for the swimming sessions that happen after work; sometimes more than 3km in the pool.
What is the importance of sports in your life?
Alexis: Sport has always helped me keep a balance with my mind; level of concentration and overall well-being. I need a way to burn the energy.
How do you manage to train with a busy schedule?
Alexis: I wake up very early; I live close to work to avoid wasting time in traffic and always have all 3 sets of training gear (swim/run/cycle) in the car to be ready to tackle the next training session.
What do sports represent for you?
Alexis: It’s a lifestyle and a way to test your limits; to go beyond yourself.
Would you have a piece of advice to give to someone who is willing to start training?
Alexis: Find an activity that you will enjoy doing regularly; there is no point in trying to get into running if you already felt it was boring when you tried last Sunday. You need to have appetite for something to be able to dedicate large portion of your time to it.
If you had something additional to say, what would it be?
Alexis: « Sain de corps et d’esprit » (Healthy in body and mind)
