On October 4th, the CMA CGM Bougainville arrived in Port of Le Havre. Sporting the French colours on the occasion of her Presidential inauguration, the ship offered an impressive sight to all the locals from Le Havre.
Let’s take a look back on this incredible moment through the lens of the many people who attended this event and shared their pictures on Twitter
Antoine Boudet embarked on the giant vessel in Algeciras, Spain. In his first tweet, he says “The pilot from Port of Le Havre gets on board as the ship is nearing the Port”. Indeed, as you may know, the ship’s captain isn’t the one in charge when docking the vessel in port. Such a complex operation requires the expertise of a port Captain.
Note how small the boat is compared to the CMA CGM Bougainville. The ship’s air draft – distance between the water and the highest point of the vessel (often the antenna) – is 71 meters!

As the vessel is nearing the port, the tweet says “Land ahoy!” just like the famous explorers used to say. Very fitting given that the ship itself (and many others giant CMA CGM container ships) is named after a great explorer: Louis Antoine de Bougainville.
From the beach, people could not miss the giant vessel in the distance. The massive ship is all they could see in the horizon. The poster says: “The CMA CGM Bougainville saluted by Le Havre boaters. An amazing show before the Presidential inauguration!”

With the city in the foreground, the view is even more unique. The ship almost looks like a floating city in the distance.

The ship finally nears Port of Le Havre and is escorted by the pilot boats.
The CMA CGM Bougainville is now docked, awaiting for its presidential inauguration tomorrow.
