La Bourguette is an association located in Pertuis, France, aiming at assisting children and adults with autism within specialised establishments. Since 1973, the association has opened 9 centres to stimulate the development of autist children and adults in the French Departments of Vaucluse, Var and Bouches du Rhône. Those centers can host more than 200 residents. 250 professionals, including caseworkers, doctors and psychologists, help those people in developing their skills by placing work at the heart of their life project.
Key initiatives launched in the field of autism management
Since 2013, La Bourguette association has opened an Early Childhood Resource Unit (Pôle Ressource Petite Enfance), also called The Small Garden (Le Petit Jardin), in Montfavet (France), offering at an early-stage a multidisciplinary support, with various welcoming modalities, for disabled children and children diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorders) up to 7 years old. This establishment is dedicated to children suffering from various development disorders or severe impairments.
In 2015, the association opened a first Course Unit (Unité d’Enseignement) in the Camille Claudel school, for kindergarteners, to allow the scholar inclusion of autist children in the French Department of Vaucluse.
A renewed support from the CMA CGM Corporate Foundation
In 2008, particularly mindful of the efforts made by the association, the Foundation decided to award the Foundation Prize to La Bourguette, to support them in the development of their actions, and to encourage them to pursue their mission, – more particularly the opening of new centres.
In 2013, the Foundation financed the arrangement of a balneotherapy area for the children of the Early Childhood Resource Unit in Avignon (France), The Small Garden, for re-education sessions and to serve as a playground.
In 2016, the Foundation supported again La Bourguette for providing touchscreen tablets to seventeen autist children aged from 3 to 7 years old, from the Early Childhood Resource Unit in Montfavet. Those touchscreen tablets are equipped with specific software programs. Autist children are often diagnosed with language disorder. This kind of tool facilitates the use of images, texts, sounds, making it possible to get around motor difficulties. It also provides the establishment’s professionals with an interface that is able to display software applications including specific methods, educational programs, learning exercises, alternative communication systems. This way, autist children can develop their abilities to communicate, to express a need or a feeling, the way they understand and adapt to social situations.
