The concept of refrigerated containers evolved in the late 1960s and has been a major revolution for the shipping industry.
It is clearly the safest way to transport perishable goods and ensure that they keep their freshness no matter what the external constraints.
However, we need to go back in time to understand where the refrigeration system comes from.
A brief history
Formerly seafood was very popular but difficult to transport, which limited its consumption. Therefore, a ‘best’ solution needed to be found.
In 1876, Charles Tellier, a French engineer called “The Father of Cold”, created the first refrigerated system which worked with methyl ether, a chemical component used in order to retain the cold.
The system, similar to an engine, was small enough to allow three units onboard “The Frigorifique”, a former sailing boat transformed into a steamboat.
Although successful it wasn’t until a year later that the project did show some good results. Another French engineer, Ferdinand Carré, improved the system in terms of refrigeration and managed to transport 150 tons of meat over 50 days without incident: a revolution was born!
